Bored at Work

So as some of you know and as others of you don't, I got a job working at the law firm of Shearman and Stirling. As a point of reference, this firm has over 200 partners, 19 offices across the globe, and was the firm that set up the Nuremberg Trials (spelling?). Anyway, it's big and important, probably one of the biggest firms in the world. But that's besides the point.

I was hired in the IT Department (information technology), which means I work with computers. Exciting? Very. especially when you realize that I have absolutely no training (formal, informal, semiformal, quasiformal, or other) when it comes to computers. None. never. I've figured out how to add links to my blog. That is it. Nothing more. None.

So i get here and my task from day one has been writing training manuals for adminstrators of an experimental database. So for those of you who are completely dense, i'm writing stuff (note that the word 'stuff' is simple and easy for your pedestrian... erm, stupid... minds to digest) that teaches administrators (the blokes in charge) how the site works. That's right. A person who has never used the database before and isn't computer savvy is teaching the experts what to do. Crazy? Apparently not. Especially when my boss says that I know more about the system than most other people do. Laughable? Very.

Part of the process of administering the site includes creating new entries, so i got to make "sample" entries to see what would happen. I was told to do this by my boss. So i did. I entered 'sample' (or something synonymous with sample) into all the entry fields, and then clicked 'post document'. But instead of appearing where it was supposed to, nothing at all happened. I couldn't find it anywhere. The next day i was in a meeting and the program's creator told me that apparently my creating that document caused the system to crash. What? Oops...

::removes hand from red button labeled 'kill everything' and walks casually away::

But it was a good kind of crashing. Since when is there a good kind of crashing? Oh well.

In all seriousness, i apparently accidentally caught a mistake that could have been silly had it gone unaddressed (I almost typed 'undressed', but since it is code and not a person of which i am speaking, that makes no sense). Anyway... that's that. Exciting stuff? Definitely.

So I finished my 'project' yesterday and my boss isn't here yet, which means I have no idea what i'm supposed to be doing. So i was just paid for an hour's worth of work which consisted of me sitting about and writing this. Oh, and drinking hazelnut flavored 'espresso-style' coffee. Good stuff. And it smells awesome.

This seems long enough for you to digest now. Enjoy-
